Aricept

The drug Aricept is used nowadays for the prevention of Alzheimer's at the middle and the latter stages of progression of the disease. The generic, or, the group name is donepezil used as a cognition improvement medicine in Alzheimer's treatment.

The type of therapy that is observed in the administration of the Aricept drug follows pharmacological lines of cognition and memory enhancement. The Aricept drug inhibits the breakdown of the enzyme Acetylcholine esterase in the brain cells that in turn improves the cognition level and stalls the fast and progressive memory loss as seen in Alzheimer's disease.

The basic pharmacological processes seen alongside Aricept treatment is not only the inhibition of the enzyme breakdown but also related metabolic changes and shifts leading to the proper functioning of other neurotransmitters, enzymes, etc.

Several contraindications result in case of Aricept administration. These are seen in patients having Aricept and related Alzheimer's drugs when they have a past medical history relating to several other complications. These kind of contraindications are seen in those patients that have a type of hypersensitive response to Aricept drug. These contraindicative symptoms include irritation, sleep disturbances, nausea and mild cognitive impairments in the hypersensitive patients.

The contraindications from Aricept treatment as suggested arise from the acute hypersensitivity that can be linked to various root causes, such as:
  • Hypersensitivity to drugs derived from piperidine sources.
  • Allergic responses to such Acetylcholine esterase inhibitor drugs.
  • Hypersensitivity caused due to sick sinus syndromes.
  • Problems arising from abnormalities in cardiac conductions.
  • Complications due to previous history of asthma and seizures.
  • Maladies created due to acute gastro-intestinal problems.
  • Complications arising due to parallel administration of Non Steroid Anti Inflammatory Drugs, commonly known as, NSAID.

The side effects of the Aricept and other drugs related to the donepezil group that inhibits the breakdown of the enzyme inhibitor, helping in reducing the risks for Alzheimer's progression, are:
  • Acute diarrhoea
  • Nausea and vomiting tendencies
  • Fatigue and insomnia
  • Anorexia
  • Mild confusion, cognition problems and irritability

One good thing about these Aricept based drugs is that the side effects are mild and can be reduced with low risk potentials after careful long term administration. Moreover the Aricept induced side effects are less than that encountered in administration of drugs like tacrine for the same purpose of Alzheimer's prevention. Unlike that drug Aricept is without any hepatotoxic side effects.

The initial donepezil group of drugs administration is a 5 milligram dose daily and only once before bedtimes. With four to six months administration the dosage in most patients can safely reach to about 10 milligrams daily. The Aricept and related drugs of the donepezil group are synthesized and developed by prominent pharmaceutical companies like Eisai Incorporated and Pfizer.

Recent researches show that the drug Aricept doesn't show such terrific healing effects in patients who have other medical complications associated with Alzheimer's. But the drug has proved to be effective not only in Alzheimer's and but in Alzheimer's related treatments. Vascular dementia is now being treated with such donepezil group of drugs like Aricept.
