The condition of Mild Cognitive Impairment is linked to the nerve degenerative diseases like the Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc. Alzheimer's disease is in fact the major Neuro degenerative disorder that involves Cognitive Impairment. Mild Cognitive Impairment, called MCI for short, affects those parts of the brain that are concerned with understanding and formulation of the responses to the externally received stimuli.

Mild Cognitive Impairment is a transient stage between the progressive changes in brain and cognition related conditions with normal aging and the development of serious maladies in the brain causing cognitive impairment symptoms. Cognitive disorders can affect many areas such as, reading, writing, language, reasoning, judgment power and even concentration levels in individuals having Mild Cognitive Impairment at a serious extent.
Cognitive Impairment Disorders are associated with Neuro diseases, such as those affecting the cholinergic nerves and their functioning, seen in case of Alzheimer's disease. Along with normal problems with Cognition, Alzheimer's type of disorders cause progressive memory loss beginning with the short termed memory at a slow pace. After sufficient progression of the disease the long term memory data banks are affected leading to further manifestations of the symptoms of the ailment.
Mild Cognitive Impairment, or, MCI can be broadly classified into two groups. They are: Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment that affects the memory and the Nonamnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment that doesn't do so. However in both these types there are manifestations of the other symptoms related to severe problems with cognition.
Recent researches on Cognitive Disorders and linked problems show that Amnestic MCI can actually be connected to Alzheimer's and other neuro diseases, where Nonamnestic MCI can't associated with such problems. Apart from that severe brain and cognition problems can lead to other manifestations of Mild Cognitive Impairment symptoms like the frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia and dementia involving Lewy bodies. However, other researches on patients suffering from Mild Cognitive Impairment revealed that many individuals with MCI may not even develop the symptoms of such dementia and with proper treatment and time the malady can to some extent be reduced.
Recent studies in the Mayo Clinic in the United States of America suggested that 12% of the patients above the age of seventy suffer from Mild Cognitive Impairment. Studies have also indicated that most of them run the risk of Alzheimer's related dementia at a later stage.
The treatment for Mild Cognitive Impairment involves oral administrations of the drug called donepezil at the early stages of the treatment. However other effective means of treatment involves:
- Use of antioxidants like Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, etc that protect the brain cells from severe oxidative stress.
- Anti inflammatory agents like NSAID, or, Non Steroid Anti Inflammatory Drugs are used to prevent brain inflammations.
- Certain drugs are administered to treat MCI that change the level of the chemicals in the brain thereby preventing cognitive impairment disorders.
Abnormal levels of blood pressure are associated with Mild Cognitive Impairment and prevention must be taken to avoid such problems. The common preventive measures taken are by checking the blood pressure imbalance, regular exercise and balanced diet.
